Looking for a particular issue of a woodworking
magazine? Here are some free search tools to help
you out.
WoodIndex
A searchable index of published woodworking articles
dating back to 1994 and updated monthly. The index
covers what are probably the most popular woodworking
magazines (a total of 10). They are: American Woodworker,
Family Handyman, Fine Homebuilding, Fine Woodworking,
Popular Woodworking, ShopNotes, Wood Magazine, Woodworker's
Journal, Woodsmith, and Workbench. Many of the results
link directly to the publisher's 'backissue' section.
Woodworking Magazine Index Searchable index
of 15,000+ articles in 38 woodworking and DIY magazines.
You can search by magazine titles, categories and
/ or by keywords. It pretty much covers all the
woodworking and DIY mags out there, some dating
back to the late 1980's. The results to not link
back to the publisher's backissues although the
site does provide links to each publisher's website
if one exists. Note: This application will only
find matches if an article title exactly matches
the entered search terms - don't expect it to behave
the way a Google search would for example.

Fine Woodworking Back Issues This is not
a search engine but instead a page that lists the
contents of back issues dating back to the mid-90's.
Of course, you can search the page using the Find
feature in your web browser.
Wood Magazine Nice search tool with options
to search by category and keyword. The one thing
missing is that the results don't link directly
to the back issues.
Popular Woodworking’s Online Magazine Index
Search a description of every article published
since 1997. You can search this data base by keyword,
by issue date or by author. Search results include
an abstract of the specific article matching your
search as well as abstracts of other articles in
the same issue.
Woodsmith A basic search box to locate back
issues. The results are nicely laid out: a blow-up
of the feature project followed by thumbnails and
brief descriptions of the other projects in the
issue.
Woodworker's Journal Their search tool enables
searching for back issues and plans (Use the "Search
Plans" link). Results include a photo and descriptive
paragraph.

Indy
Pictorial Magazine Search Indy is an inexpensive
program that allows you to search back issues of
woodworking magazines and SEE photos of the actual
projects. Several versions of the program are available.
The bundled WOOD Magazine version includes a pictorial
index of all the articles from Better Homes And
Gardens WOOD Magazine. This is the only bundled
version that includes a woodworking mag. However,
there is an unbundled version which allows you to
scan project photos from your own woodworking publications
and enter them into the Indy database. Then you
can search your custom index and view the project
photos just like with the bundled WOOD version.
Woodworker's
Guide This program allows you to search an
index of around 30,000 articles from 26 woodworking
magazines using one or more article title keywords.
The index covers most of the popular woodworking
magazines and also includes abstracts from articles
from four of the magazines. A printed version of
the index, "The Guide to Woodworking Plans and Techniques",
is also available. Both the online and printed versions
of the index are updated on at least a yearly basis.
